's race. and the republican, ken cuccinelli, looks like he might have a chance. he's moving closer to terry mcauliffe, the democrat, who's at a comfortable lead. could he pull this out? >> if you'd asked me that last week, i would have said no way, but what's happening in this race, interestingly enough, i talked to ken cuccinelli late this week, and he told me that their polls are narrowing. that's what any politician will tell you. what he's telling me is the number one reason he's closing that gap is because of one word, paul, obama care. this has become a big issue in this state race because terry mcauliffe is all in for obama care. the attorney general, ken cuccinelli, is against it. it's interesting how that obama care issue may have a big impact on a big state race on tuesday. >> interesting, can obama care trump the earlier shutdown problems which have hurt ken cuccinelli in northern virginia which provides about 30% of the statewide vote. >> exactly. >> in new york city, quickly, the mayor's race, fascinating decision by second district court of appeals putting a stop on b

race getting tighter. ken cuccinelli behind terry mccaulliffe. is any of this a coincidence? what do you make of all of these crosscurrents? >> the shutdown hurt cuccinelli. no doubt about it. a lot of government employees, contractors in virginia but at the same time this obama care website bedbackal is hurting mccauliffe. we have seen most of the polls showing him well ahead and then it's starteniing to tighten. they think that he has this thing and that cuccinelli is not worth to show up at the polls so republicans feel like they could make a comeback here. it's a tough road for cuccinelli no doubt about it. that as you mentioned is why democrats are bringing out big guns to make sure people show up at the polls. >> you think about this. if it's a shutdown that adversely hit republican cuccinelli in this case talking about a lot of government workers, they have very good health plans for many of them. would they be as adversely affected by this health care thing as we're lead to believe and benefits for cuccinelli could be quite limited. >> there is that element. if you have lost
governor's race. larry, start with you. this one in virginia. terry mcauliff and ken cuccinelli. it has been all over the board, has it not. right after the government shutdown it looked like mcauliff had a wider lead. that gap seems to be kind of closing. where do they stand? what do you think? >> well, the obama care controversy has, i think, cut a couple of points off mcauliff's margin. the problem for the republican ken cuccinelli is that mcauliff ran up the score when he could during the government shutdown and raising far more money than the republicans have been able to do for ken cuccinelli. >> so frankly he could have won by 10 i think mcauliff is more likely to win by 4, 5, 6, 7, something like that. look where they are winning? they are winning where they shouldn't in a blue state with chris christie. they are losing where they should be winning in a purple state that has often voted republican, virginia. they have got to look at their two candidates, chris christie and ken cuccinelli and figure out what worked and what didn't, and how can we apply those lessons to 2016? >> n
question that ken cuccinelli, the republican gubernatorial candidate in the state of virginia is asking. he joins us now on the phone. what do you make of this unraveling of the health care law? the president when he was stumpbing on behalf of your opponent terry mcauliffe didn't mention it once. >> isn't that incredible? the most in the news item in the whole race and he doesn't even mention it. and that tells you perhaps more than anything else he could have said. it is falling apart before our very eyes. but here in virginia, we've also got democrats who are say things like, you know, these doctors aren't taking enough medicaid and medicare patients, maybe we got to force them to do it. so the squashing of liberty under obama care is nowhere near done yet. and we contend with more and more of it. and these folks, including my opponent, didn't think it went far enough. it is a major distinction in the race. tomorrow has turned very much into a referendum on obama care. we were glad the president came in yesterday because it helped crystalize everyone's focus on that very point. >> for tho
hours before voting begins, democratic terry mcauliffe leads cuccinelli by a slim margin. is the obama care debacle the reason this race has tightened? >> no, this is an example where the tea party is killing the republican party. mcauliffe is a good friend of mine, i can't believe he's going to be governor. the tea party nominated this right wing guy who doesn't stand a chance. it's not clear. >> another tea party victim. >> he does stand a chance. he's down six points. the problem really is the libertarian candidate who has ten points which he's taking from the republicans. the option -- the problem with the republicans is they can't get all these people together. they're not lock step like the left. it would be great for the libertarian candidate. >> will be a lot bigger -- >> there was reporting today that said women are going to make the difference in virginia. that's true everywhere. since you gave women the vote, that's going to happen in all these states. >> what a mistake. >> northern virginia has changed a lot demographically. the federal government shutdown really pissed the
rubio is ready to go outlet ken cuccinelli. carl, this is getting very interesting. >> 36 hours in the polls will be closed. this is a case in which both the republicans and others have been campaigning and a barrage of attacks killing the virginia airways and debates have been personally nasty as they go back and forth. both sides have very specific messages. ken cuccinelli is trying to make waves and he also has been working towards good turnout. they're about half of what came out and last year and since then it's a real issue. campaigning with joe biden this morning, it seems that republican who has united this has been out of touch. going after the issue of women's health issues. >> he still has not explained why he supports this and this includes the focus and he has attacked women's health care access and the social security you have paid into and the scientific research. >> we spent about $20 million on his campaign and a lot of it has been seen negatively. a lot less money and can kuchen -- ken cuccinelli has been recognizing that the affordable care act is being litiga
. this has been a very, very negative race and so it's six points and cuccinelli has closed that, largely by trying to make this a referendum on obamacare. he leads with men and the poll and others have suggested there's a passion on his side more so than mcauliffe but mcauliffe has a significant advantage with women. that's what many have said is driving the democrats. there's a lot of rhetoric about that in the past couple of days. there's an opportunity for a comeback but it would be surprise at this point. democrats increasingly enthusiastic about what's unfolding here. jenna: you said that marco rubio is coming out. there have been a lot of democratic stars also the last few days. >> sure. vice president joe biden was campaigning with mcauliffe this morning. they've known each other for deck ateds in american politics over the course of the weekend. barack obama was campaigning for mcauliffe as well. hillary clinton and bill clinton has been on the campaign trail for him. democrats are saying that this should be about the republicans just being too radical, too extreme. listen. >> la
